It was a cold day in Hong Kong (that’s pretty unusual!) so this was the perfect day to go for some HK style hot pot - so I have decided to check out this restaurant called Sun Kwong Fat (新廣發) @ Sha Tin Wai. This is definitely an off-the-beaten-track spot that you have to check out if you want cheap and authentic Hong Kong local delicacies!
As I walked into the restaurant, the open-air layout and the multiple foldable tables immediately reminded me of a typical Dai Pai Dong - an old school style roadside restaurant in Hong Kong, but having hot pots at a Dai Pai Dong setup was definitely a first for me. Make sure you check out my YouTube video below for the full review!
As soon as I was greeted by the staff, they handed me a piece of paper and wrote down my arrival time. Sounds confusing right? But Sun Kwong Fat actually does all-you-can-eat hot pot, so you will have a two-hour limit to pick whatever food you want in the buffet area, and that would cost you HKD$88 per head (~A$15) + HKD$48 (~A$8) for the soup base per table. So it’s definitely cheaper to get a larger group of people to come here and split the cost of the soup base.
.

They will write down the time when you arrived at the restaurant, so make sure you don’t stay there for more than two hours because they do keep an eye on that!
Once I’ve settled down, the staff came to my table and set up the stove and passed down a large pot of boiling water for the hot pot. She also gave me a packet of Lee Kum Kee hot pot soup base for me to put into the pot. So yep, this is pretty much a DIY hot pot and you have to help yourself on everything.

And here comes the food! There’s definitely a wide variety of food that you could choose from, anything that you could name from beef slices, chicken breasts, fish balls, beef meatballs, Chinese veggies, etc. Pretty much any typical hot pot ingredients that you could find. But apart from these usual food items, to add a bit of the local flavour twists, they also have a wide range of animal internals to choose from and that is what caught my attention

What animal internals are on offer? They have pig’s stomach, cow’s small intestines and ox tongue, and this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Here is a photo of me playing with a cow’s small intestine. It looks like an elephant trunk, with the taste of some residue within the intestines. Interesting flavours indeed.
All in all this all-you-can-eat hot pot was really value for money and you will be assured to come out of the restaurant with a full belly with the food varieties that they offer. And soft drinks are also included in the price as well! The atmosphere is fantastic and it is the perfect choice if you would like to get a taste where do the local Hong Kongers go for great food.
One thing though, make sure you finish up all the food that you’ve taken, otherwise a fine of HKD$30 would apply per person for any leftovers. So, don’t waste any food!
