Despite being miles away from Hong Kong, Sydney has never been short of dim sums and they are scattered all over the city - but talking about a Michelin’s Star dim sum restaurant chain in Sydney? Yes, it’s Tim Ho Wan. We are so blessed to have two stores here too. Want to know how that goes? Make sure you check out my YouTube video below!

I visited the place on a Saturday afternoon, and luckily the restaurant was pretty spacious so there were plenty of seats to cater for a capacity of around 200-350 customers based on what I’ve seen. I did not have to wait for a seat at all!

Shrimp dumplings cost A$7.9 (four pieces)

To determine whether a dim sum restaurant is good or not, you can always tell from their Shrimp Dumplings (Haar Gaau 蝦餃). It is a very common dim sum that you can find in a lot of Cantonese restaurants, hence a good indicator on how good the food is for a restaurant.

I was impressed with the thin though of the dumplings, and how fresh the shrimp was. Compared to what I usually have in Hong Kong, the shrimps were more juicy - it could be because the ingredients were sourced directly from Australia so this definitely gives an upper hand.

Braised chicken feet in abalone sauce cost A$6.9

The idea of eating chicken feet might sound a bit weird at first, especially for those who tend to have a more Western palette, but I have to say this braised chicken feet in abalone sauce (鮑汁鳳爪) was delicious - maybe that is because it is one of my dim sum favourites may play a part as well. The chicken feet were well-braised in the abalone sauce with a good balance of the sweetness and the savouriness, and the bean curds at the bottom were a a plus as well!

Rice noodles rolls with deep fried doughs cost A$7.9

You can never go wrong with rice noodles rolls with deep fried dough (炸兩) - especially the good ones. The ones that they had at Tim Ho Wan were great - the silky rice noodles, crispy dough with drizzles of sweet soy sauce, this combination worked really well.

Mango pomelo sago costs A$6.9

As I always say, a meal is not complete without desserts. A mango pomelo sago (楊枝甘露) would be the perfect dessert to soak up all the oily dim sums that I just had. With the creamy coconut milk and strong mango flavours in this dessert, I was indulging myself - even if I slipped my bowl off and got some on my fingers! It was a great way to wrap up the dim sums feast.

To sum up, I really enjoyed the food at Tim Ho Wan as they always come freshly made - as compared to some Chinese restaurants where they will put the food in a dim sum cart and they would have been sitting there for a while. Also helps that the fresh ingredients that are available in Australia have also made the food tastes better!
